Warming impacts potential germination of non-native plants on the Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده
Abstract The Antarctic Peninsula is under pressure from non-native plants and this risk expected to increase climate warming. Establishment subsequent range expansion of depend in part on germination ability conditions, but quantifying these processes has yet receive detailed study. Viability testing plant growth responses simulated soil surface conditions over an annual cycle show that 16 species, including grasses, herbs, rushes a succulent, germinated continued development warming scenario. Thermal requirement (degree day sum) was calculated for each species field soil-temperature recordings indicate satisfied as far south 72° S. Here, we the establishment potential number geographical range, considerably greater than currently suggested by distribution modelling approaches, with important implications assessments along Peninsula.

Plants and Soil Microbes Respond to Recent Warming on the Antarctic Peninsula
Annual temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth, have risen by up to 0.56°C per decade since the 1950s. Terrestrial and marine organisms have shown changes in populations and distributions over this time, suggesting that the ecology of the Antarctic Peninsula is changing rapidly. However, these biological records are shorter in length than the me...
متن کاملWidespread Biological Response to Rapid Warming on the Antarctic Peninsula
Recent climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula is well documented [1-5], with warming, alongside increases in precipitation, wind strength, and melt season length [1, 6, 7], driving environmental change [8, 9]. However, meteorological records mostly began in the 1950s, and paleoenvironmental datasets that provide a longer-term context to recent climate change are limited in number and often f...
متن کاملDistribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water on the warming continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula
We use autonomous underwater vehicles to characterize the spatial distribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) on the continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and present the first near-synoptic measurements of mesoscale features (eddies) containing UCDW on the WAP. Thirty-three subsurface eddies with widths on the order of 10 km were detected during four glider deployment...
متن کاملPredicting the Impacts of Climate Change on the Potential Distribution of Major Native Non-Food Bioenergy Plants in China
Planting non-food bioenergy crops on marginal lands is an alternative bioenergy development solution in China. Native non-food bioenergy plants are also considered to be a wise choice to reduce the threat of invasive plants. In this study, the impacts of climate change (a consensus of IPCC scenarios A2a for 2080) on the potential distribution of nine non-food bioenergy plants native to China (v...
